Walter O. Thompson Jr. aged 74 years, of Middleboro, died on Thurs. June 28, 2007, at New England Medical Center , Boston , after a brief illness. He was born in Carver, the son of the late Walter O. and Dorothy L. (Shurtleff) Thompson. He was a 1951 graduate of Middleboro Memorial High School . He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He had worked at the former First National Store of Middleboro, for several years, and retired as custodian at the School Street School , Middleboro. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church , Middleboro, where he had sang in the choir and played the organ. He was also a member of the Middleboro & Lakeville Knights of Columbus, the Middleboro Historical Association, the Cape Cod Postcard Club, the Middleboro Senior Center, and was a historian of Middleboro, and had given lectures and put on slide-shows about Middleboro history. He had donated his postcard collection to the Middleboro Public Library and his collection of historical memorabilia to the Middleboro Historical Association. He had done extensive research into the genealogy of his family. Survivors include his companion Irene Freitas of Middleboro, one brother; David E. Thompson of Middleboro, two sisters; Barbara E. Travassos of Middleboro, and Jane Dias of Lakeville, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was brother of the late Thomas R. Thompson, Dorothy A. Waldron, and Harriet L. Thompson. Funeral service will be held in the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St. Middleboro, on Tues. at 11 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Mon. 6-9 pm.
