Middleboro – Herbert F. Cowan, aged 90 years, of Middleboro died peacefully on Saturday, November 19 at Hannah B.G. Shaw Home in Middleboro. He was the husband of Marion (Commeau) Cowan; they had been married for 67 years. Born May 5, 1921 in Orleans, MA, he was the son of the late Joseph and Marian (King) Cowan. He attended schools on Cape Cod and Middleboro. Upon graduation from high school, Mr. Cowan served in the United States Navy Seabees Construction Battalion, having received training and performing duty in Virginia and California before being deployed to Guam until the end of World War II. A longtime member of the First Baptist Church in North Middleboro for many years, he served in a number of ways including as member on the Standing Committee. Mr. Cowan worked as an automobile mechanic for many years in Middleboro, where he owned and operated his own business, Herb’s Front End, on North Street. He also spent a few years as a custodian at Middleboro High School before his retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and making crafts, most notably his handmade cranberry scoops for Ocean Spray. A longtime resident of North Middleboro, he and his wife once had the honor of being named Grand Marshals for the 4th of July Parade. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Terry and wife Jaki of East Falmouth, and Dave and wife Sue of Carver. He also leaves four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three brothers, George of Bridgewater, Melbourne of Florida and Laurence of Lakeville. He was the brother of the late Dorothy Caswell and Kenneth and Robert Cowan. Calling Hours will be at the First Baptist Church in North Middleboro, 111 Plymouth Street (Route 18), from 10-11 am on Tues. Nov. 22nd . A service celebrating Herb’s life will follow at 11 am in the Church. Burial will follow at Central Cemetery, Middleboro. Arrangements by Ashley Funeral Home, Middleboro.
