Alden arrived in France with the U.S. Seventh Army in late 1944.  He marched through the northeast portion of France as part of the XXI Corps.  Throughout the winter of 1944-1945 he fought in bitter cold and snowy conditions to drive the Germans out of the Alsace-Lorraine region of France .  He fought to repel the German counter-offensive known as Operation North Wind.  His unit eventually pushed into Germany .
