H. Alden Sinnott, aged 86 years, of Middleboro, died on Thurs. February 3, 2011,
at
Morton
Hospital
,
Taunton
. He was the husband of Mildred M (Soule) Sinnott; they had been married for 62
years. He was born in
Bridgewater
, son of the late Henry Alden and Marian Florence (Dunham) Sinnott. He was a
1943 graduate of Bridgewater
High School
. He served in the United States Army, during WWII.
Alden arrived in
France
with the U.S. Seventh Army in late 1944. He marched through the northeast
portion of
France
as part of the XXI Corps. Throughout the winter of 1944-1945 he fought in
bitter cold and snowy conditions to drive the Germans out of the Alsace-Lorraine
region of
France
. He fought to repel the German counter-offensive known as Operation North
Wind. His unit eventually pushed into
Germany
. He crossed the
Rhine
, and continued marching until his unit reached Hitler’s infamous “Eagle’s
Nest” mountainside retreat. He stayed in
Germany
after the war in
Europe
officially ended as a member of the Army of Occupation working to restore order
to the land. Alden was waiting to be shipped to the Pacific Theater of War
when the Japanese surrendered. Alden was a humble man who essentially never
discussed his war service. It was only very late in his life did he reveal
any of this, and most of the information has been gathered since his passing. He
retired in 1988, from Stop & Shop Supermarket, after 40 years of service. He
was a longtime member of the Central
United
Methodist
Church
, where he had taught Sunday school, was an usher, and was past president of the
Men’s Club. He was a 53 year member of the May Flower Lodge A.F. & A.M.
and was a past worshipful master. He was a
member of the Old Colony-Harmony Royal Arch Chapter, Royal and Select Master
Mason, Bay State Commandery

He enjoyed playing Bingo and cards at the
Middleboro Council on Aging. Survivors include his wife, one son; Richard A and
his wife Susan Sinnott of Middleboro, a daughter; Linda J Merritt of Middleboro,
two grandchildren; Jared A Sinnott of Middleboro, Tara M and her husband Mark
Rezendes of
Westport
, two great-grandchildren; Camryn and Skylar Rezendes. Visiting
hours will be held on Tues. Feb. 8th from 4-8 pm, with a
Masonic service at 7 pm, in the Ashley Funeral Home,
35 Oak St.
Middleboro. Funeral services will be held on Wed. in the funeral
home at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made
